2004 Camry LE Speed sensor P0500

Asked by Geoffrey Jul 16, 2021 at 07:34 AM about the 2004 Toyota Camry LE V6 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

04 Camry LE 3.0 auto
Speedo fluctuated then stopped. ABS and Brake lights on. Car shifts
erratically. P0500 code. I replaced the VSS under the air box. No change I
replaced it a second time in case it was a faulty sensor..I checked every
single fuse in the car. One blown in cabin fuse panel, (#28 15a "power point")
That didn't fix it either. The last thing I can think of is bad wiring somewhere.
I'm not sure where to start with that. This is my mother's car. It sits
sometimes for weeks as she doesn't often need to go anywhere, so it's not
like it gets abused or goes off-road. (unless my elderly mother has a secret
life I'm not aware of)

Just a couple questions:
I've seen a second sensor mentioned in some comments. Is there?
Does anyone know which fuse the VSS is connected to?
Aside from checking the wires for shorts/damages, did I miss anything?

I'm trying not to get frustrated with it. Since it's not a daily driver, I have some
time. Thanks.

I DON'T KNOW if this issue applies to your car, this was mostly for the Gen 4 models ( 1997-2001 ) I had this issue and I almost scrapped my car... I was lucky enough to get the EXACT matching resonator for MY car, I bought several from ebay, all did NOT work, see attached videos.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcVhAsNL6mo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uYo1dfHK_s

Thanks for your response. I've seen this before in another video. I did replace the sensor twice. Neither worked. When I measured those replacements I saw that they were about 3mm short. They were cheap replcament parts from ebay. So I ordered the correct one from Rock Auto and it still doesn't work. SO now I'm fishing around for that miracle answer. If it is that ceramic resonator, what a terrible design from Toyota. You'd think they'd run that circuit in parallel to both speedo and ECM instead of relying on a 50 cent piece. Anyway, I'll keep searching...

Try going to ( octopart.com ) see attachment, I would CALL any of those distributors to see if you can get it from them. anything other than ZTT-4.00MG will NOT work ECS ( original MFG. ) quit making them in Dec 2020 but I think they sold off their remaining stock. It's amazing how this tiny-tiny part can totally cripple the vehicle, I just wonder how many folks "scrapped" their cars because they could NOT pass state insp. because it sets off the ck. eng. lt.

Update: Fixed. The two sensors I used were both from ebay/amazon. As it turns out, they were both about 2-3mm shorter than stock. I ended up ordering one from Rock Auto. (abt $90) That didn't work either. Something I hadn't thought of. Each time I went to start the car, the battery was low and I had to jump it. Today I went over the whole system. Cleaned ABS sensors and checked wires. Cleaned battery terminals and checked plugs. I jumped it and let it idle for about an hour. Alternator and battery checked out. When I got back in I saw that the ABS, Brake and CEL were off. Took it for a drive and everything worked. So, the two cheap sensors I tried may have worked if I had done the thorough inspection as well.
