Tried a very strong magnet right? So I understand correctly, did the socket slip onto /over the spark plug and is now resting with the center of the plug through the short sockets drive 3/8 square?

If you can get a socket extension to "plug" into the square hole on the socket, a piece of electrical tape or similar placed over the end of the extension square end might do it. The tape over the end will tighten the connection so that the socket will stay attached to the extension so it can be removed. If the socket is positioned as "Auto_Centric" suggested then a strong magnet should get it out. Also depending where the socket is located a pair of very long needle nosed pliers may be of help. Please provide more information on the exact whereabouts of the socket.
