2005 Chevy Cobalt won't start and makes strange noise

Asked by Ricky May 19, 2016 at 09:00 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son's 2005 Chevy Cobalt died on him while he
was driving and now it won't start.  It makes an
odd noise I've never heard before when you try to
start it.  We've checked the battery and the fuel
pump and replaced the starter.  Is there anything
else it could be besides the timing chain ruining
the engine?  Thanks.

There's probably lots of things, but the timing chain does spring to mind. Don't keep trying to start it. If the damage hasn't already been done it soon will be if its a timing problem. Why did you replace the starter? Randomly replacing parts and hoping for the best is not likely to help. If you're unable to do some proper diagnostics yourself you need to get it to a proper shop and let them have a look. It will save you money in the long run.
