Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The positive and negative terminals were touched at same time by a tool which made a spark.  The wire was off of the positive post because I was changing the terminal.  Now I hear the starter whine when I start the car.  Please explain what all I might have damaged.

You say it is the starter solenoid? Is the starter solenoid going out now? I will never do that again because I lost focus due to a new stubborn terminal and having to do some tapping to get in on so I used a somewhat long tool laid flat and it touched the two terminals. This is a new starter (put in by a mechanic, not by me) thank you for the quick answer.

I do not know. Mechanic installed it about 2 months ago as well as an alternator. Would that make a difference? I can see the alternator and it is shiny and and looks new but I cannot see the starter.

You'll be OK. Just gotta be careful u know. Learn by doing.. Bet u won't do that again..lol.. That's a good old car by the way.. Have a nice afternoon..

The sound can also just go away. You'll be fine though. Don't stress..;)

If you touched both battery posts with a tool and the positive cable was not connected I fail to see how anything could have been damaged.
