Is the CEL on? Wheter it is or not recommend an OBDII scan 1996 is the first year OBDII was mandatory and will help eliminate much guesswork and buying parts you don't need. Could be so many things. Even without CEL it can throw a code. You have 1.8L 7A FE or 1.6L?

Still say get it OBD scanned. Like I say, even without the CEL it could have thrown a code that will at least point you in the right direction. Just too many possibilities. You don't say mileage but that 1.6 is a good proven engine that will go 250,000 with proper maintenance

Not sure of mileage because rev counter and speedometer don't workbut iI'll have it OBD scanned. Thanks. Any advice on how to get the rev counter and speedometer functional? This is my first car and I've only had it 4 months but it was parked 4 years before I purchased it and worked well (engine wise) before this problem started.

The OBD scan will tell you the mileage also, it's counted and stored in the ECU whether the odo and speedo is working or not. It sounds like a ground problem, behind the instrument cluster when the both fail, tjhey are fed from different sources but have a common ground

Thanks for your input. Being adventurous I cleaned the throttle body and the car is purring like a cat
