I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla and it's stuck
in park. I know about the trick to get it
unstuck by the gear shifter. What could be
causing this?

Turn the key on , and check the shifter that activates the solenoid , but also check your fuses , if the brake lights are not working it wont let you take the car out of park , also check your brake light switch that can also wont let you take it out of park , if the switch its bad or fuses are bad the car wont go out of park ....see if this helps ya and go from there.....I have own like 10 Toyotas in my entire life , great cars , affordable and ez to fix but sometimes they can give a headache like any other car. But it could be something as simple as this ( brake lights switch , brake lights fuses ) check them all and see if this can help ya...
