98 Corolla Tranny question

Asked by MattC76 Jul 08, 2013 at 01:15 PM about the 1998 Toyota Corolla CE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

just replaced tranny in 98 Corolla with good used 60,000 mile tranny, no issues for a
week, ran smooth, shifted perfectly. After about a week it began making a whirring
noise upon acceleration...(sounded like a jet airplane). While driving down the road, let
off the accelerator to begin stopping when the car down shifted wheels locked up and
came to a sudden stop. Was able to return home at a speed slow enough to prevent
the tranny from shifting. After tearing replaced tranny apart found thin shavings in the
bottom of the differential cover, and differential was loose. What could make this car
keep going through trannys?

Your 1998 is the first of the 8th Generation Corollas, 1998 to 2002. Some but not all got the 1.8L 1ZZFE, but in 1999 all got that engine. I am wondering if for one, is it the right transmission, designed to be mated with the 1.8 and are you sure, maybe you were lied to and that transmission really had 60,000 on it and not 200,000 on a transmission somewhere between 10 and 14 years old? Would not be the first time that happened. Other than that, sorry I am no help really knowing what might be happening.

Sounds like you didn't get a "good" used transmission, you got a "bad" used transmission

UPDATE: So I put another used tranny in..now this one has a hard 1st to 2nd shift and is taking longer than it should to shift. The more I drive it the better it seems. Is there anything I should check?

Already checked fluids and no leaks. Was just wondering if something could be sticking inside?
