My son bought a 2000 corolla from his room mate, well 2 months later the engine is shot, burning oil. We got a new engine, my mechanic said it was hard to find, but it burns a lot of oil too. You have to add oil every week. The mechanic says thats the way that particular engine is. Should I just dump the car?

Well, read this and realize that it is a 16 years old car, http://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Corolla/2000/engine
If you have close to 200,000 miles on this car, I would probably not want to ride out the rough waters of repairs.

I am a true believer in trying addictives first it either is going to work or not so if you would like to give it a try add some Lucas Engine Oil Stop Leak may or may not work but it is worth a try.
my 2000 corolla has 170k miles and burns a qt of oil every 1500 miles. i use royal purple full synthetic, but should probably use a high mileage version. it doesn't bother me. it is supposed to have 4qts of oil but i have probably ran it with 2qts on average a lot more than 4. the motor still runs well. no big deal!
Go to the mechanic and beat him for installing the engine knowing it would burn oil like that!!!!!!!
