Muddy, reddish coolant in overflow?

Asked by Robert Jul 12, 2021 at 04:32 AM about the 2004 Toyota Highlander FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Looking to purchase a used SUV. The one I
drove earlier tonight seemed extraordinarily
solid and clean and everything works. But
when I stopped to perform my usual "used car
inspection" (ie: engine hott: look for leaks,
noises, smells, elec abnormalities, check
fluids, etc) there were no unusual or
unexplained leaks, noises or smells of any
kind. However, when opened the hood I
noticed that the radiator fluid in the overflow
tank was a muddy reddish brown color and
looked as if it had been bubbling out the top
of the tank at some point (not during my test
drive). Also the auto trans fluid level was far
above the "hot" line on the stick but smelled
normal. Whats wrong with this thing?
