May be a plugged catalytic converter, have an exhaust shop check it out.

OK sat over winter ..started last week sputtered and backfired and blew out flex pipe and ran good but loud so we thought you were right must be plugged cat. Took out today and barely could get to gas station ...put fresh gas in still ran badly. smelled strong raw gasoline. push slowly (in neutral) on gas it would rev up ...push hard on gas sputters like crazy almost like it is chocking itself out...

Number of things but sounds like a fuel issue. Throttle Positioning Sensor should be checked out along with the fuel pressure. What size is this engine so I could tell you what the fuel pressure should be.

You can rent a fuel pressure gauge from the parts store, but you need to have all the right fittings to tap into the fuel line up on the intake manifold. Then start it up and let it idle to see what the pressure is. When you shut it down, let it sit for 5 minutes to see if the fuel pressure drops more than 5 lbs. If it does then there are leaky fuel injectors,

Diagnostic of a problem is a process of elimination. Not gonna keep guessing until we have some known facts.
