I have a Toyota Sienna 99 van. The latch on the rear hatch door broke and can't be opened. Is there any way to poen the door from the inside. The covering can't be removed to get to the door locking device without the door being open. HELP! Thanks, Brenda

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The latch on the rear hatch handle connects to a small plastic piece which attaches inside the door to the locking mechanism. The door latch broke off from this plastic connector with the door in the closed position. I cannot repair thsi without removing the interior trim. I can't remove the interior trim with out opening the rear hatch. Is there any way to release the rear hatch from the inside without ripping off the interior trim?

funny I just had to fix mine last night. this first link helped me the most with my problem. one of the postings said you can remove the large back door panel without removing the top window, then the side window interior panels. I was not able to get the bottom off without removing the other 2 first. The 2nd link was not my problem, but I'm forwarding it anyway. http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic203428.htm http://www.siennaclub.org/forum/lofiversion/index.php?t7285.html

I have exactly the same van as you have and problem. What you can do, detach top of panel off by removing the bolts from the two handles, then pry the panel both upper corners of panel until it comes partly off. Pull the cable up until the door opens. You can replace that handle also for about 50-60 dollars. Just shop around for cheaper prices over the internet for sure you'll save a lot of money.
