A gas motor can "diesel" (basically stalling, coughing/sputtering) and continue to do so for awhile, that can be caused by carbon buildup and why i was asking. You could add a switch. You haven't mentioned any specifics on your motor or how long it continues to run for

no stalling, coughing or sputtering, it simply will not shut off. I turn the key to the off position but it continues to run. I had to move the key to the start position which caused the starter and bendix to scream and shut off. I'm so confused. Just bought the truck.

I meant to say you could add a switch to the ignition circut so you can shut it down manually, i would only use that as a temporary solution until you can track down the actual issue which sounds like it's a ignition related issue
