Check the transmission fluid and how many miles on fluid? Been serviced regularly? How many miles on car?
It is a 5 speed manual and there are 197,000 miles on the car.
i can start it and put in gear but when i let off clutch in gear it will stay running.
i got the axels to engage and it moves but now my timing belt is out
I have changed both of my cv axles and put my car on the ground it will start but will not engage gears and accelerate

1997 cavalier grinding noise from drivers side drive axel.Wheel bearing seems fine, noise coming from where axel enters trans. Is there a bearing here or could the inner cvc joint cause noise>
