I appear to be losing oil (drip) in front of the left front wheel.

it's not a GIANT drip? oil level dropping in the crankcase? Back in the day before crankcase ventillation, oil would go where it shoudln't and would be shuffled back into the crankcase...in your case am going to diagnose a PCV valve is defective, clobbered and won't let gasses through. Open the hood, you'll see an Elbow going from the valve cover to the intake plenum...this is our culprit, should rattle once plucked from it's location, is filthy, does not know how to wipe properly, and needs to get replaced. This lack of involvement has forced the fumes down what must be a fail-safe by the minds of MBZ~
The pipe may be for a oil cooler. The pipe might go to the transmission. The oil may be leaking from above and traveling down to the low point of the pipe. Is the fluid red or brown?

these things are normally about four to seven bucks~ smog maintenance item~
On my '79 300sd, that area you just defined is where there are the two thick & large turbo diesel engine oil cooling hoses that go forward, from the bottom of the oil filter, & over to their own cooling vertical "mini" radiator, and then after lowering the oil temp., they go back again to the bottom of the oil filter.That "mini" radiator is on the driver's side, next to the large main engine coolant radiator. Very unusual you have a leak there!, But I guess anything can happen, even a fitting that needs tightening!! In the Meantime, check engine oil level often!
