Asked by Thadd Oct 21, 2010 at 01:39 PM about the 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 280 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I go to put gas in this car, it will only take anot 5 or 6 gallons, then it starts "kicking Back", and won't take any more fuel
Weird, huh?
Anyone have a clue why???

Try backing up the nozzle from the tank and fill easy. When there is air pressure in the gas tank it pushes on a little medal part inside the nozzle to shut it off (hence-it thinks the tank is full).

You sometimes have to turn the fuel nozzle upside down that, is what I have found anyway. hope this helps!

sounds like you may have in the past overfilled it several times, kept pumping gas in when the pump nozzle clicked off, this will overflow the EVAP system, your trusted mechanic can drain it,excess gas.

Papa; THANX; I bought it recently from my trusted Mercedes guy, who spent a year or two at the factory servicing M-B owned vehicles, and has serviced my old 190 for about 15 years. I will contact him in the next couple of days :)

try all the helpful hints here, but its more likely tnan not that the charcoal canister(emissions component) or the filler neck tube are faulty

Have had the same problem for 2 years, I have fitted new fill tube, replaced charcoal canister, checked vent pipes are clear,. I am now of the opinion that something is blocking the main inlet to the tank and when fuelling a certain amount of fuel goes in the main tube but when it fills up drains over the valve system in the filler tube and fills the tank slowly. This will be my next check

I do not want Mecerdes anymore! I bought 2017 CLA 300! I am frustrating every time I need gas! Can never get full tank!!! The brakes make very loud squeaking that’s embarrassing and the dealer service told me that the car is also needed alignment and the car only have 26,000 miles! I am ready for trade in for a Lexus— I have enough of this luxury car that not worth my money!!!

You shouldn’t ever buy the cheapest model in any lineup. That’s not much of a luxury car & prone to odd issues due to corners being caught to keep the cost of the car under $50k. You should have bought a Passat I guess

you can try use a compressor and hose with a air nosel disconnect the hose from the fuel tank the the evape charcoal vape canister and open the vent off the evape canister and try blowing out through the hose you would be surprised what crude comes out the charcoal canister if it will not then you have clogged vape charcoal canister and will need replacement one of the most common causes of failure is overfilling the gas tank and causes raw gas to go to the canister only fumes are supposed to go there and then recycled back to the tank
