What does the "ACCUMULATOR" do in the suspension/ shocks system.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After stupidly leaving a very heavy load on my '94 E-320 Wagon, my MB sits lower and driving bumpy roads feels like I have no shocks. I depressed them for so long that they are no longer absorbing bumps as they should -- or so I thought.! I was simply going to get 4 new shocks since the coil springs are O.K. My MB mechanics say my shocks are O.K., and all I need are a set of "ACCUMULATORS" for a mere $700 +. I do not know what they are yet, but I am confused now. Can anyone educate me about what they are talking about? Thank you very much, CARL ERLENDSON ---------

ma mans knows an accumulator is a way of storing hydraulic energy like a battery is for electricity. ma mans will tell you to find information about tower bridge in London England this used accumulators originally to raise the bridge.

What that guy said (in an arse about tit kind of way) is actually correct. Although I can't remember where they are on a 124 chassis, what you're basically looking for are 2 spheres, 1 for each of the rear shocks. Look either under the rear of the car somewhere near the subframe or in the boot, either behind the side panels or under the floor. Good luck.

you really need to consider keeping the car the way it was designed so you maintain the best performance and ride. Go to ecklersmbzparts.com and price out what you need. I think you will find their prices are a fraction of MB's and actually have a longer warranty. The part you need may be item P32-074 which sells for 119.99 each. Your car has two of these.
