Auto trans shifts hard in to drive while parked, wont go past neutral while attempting to put in park

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
The auto trans on our 2002 SLK320 shifts hard while putting it in to drive while not
moving. When I attempt to place it back in to park, the shift arm will not go past neutral. I
turn the key off and it will then allow me to go in to the parked position. Whats up? Any
suggestions or answers?

tHE TRANSMISSON NEED CLUTCHES IN IT, TOO INGAUGE THE TRANMISSION TOO SHIFT INTO GEAR. NEEDS TRANMISSION WORK ASAP.
Mark, It was not clutches in the tranny. What it was is, there is a sensor switch under the center console where the shifter arm is located. If you spilled anything on or around it, or if you just cleaned the car and used any cleaner, chances are, you have gotten it damp and it is now not working properly. Either give it time to dry or pull the console wood cover off and locate the sensor to either clean it or replace it. If you disconnected the battery, you will need to turn the steering wheel full lock in both directions to reset your other systems as well. You can read about this in your owners handbook. Best of luck, Glenn
