Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 F250 with a 5.4 engine seems to always need oil, but there are no visible leaks. It has 128k miles. Anyone have any ideas?

it's possible that your engine is burning the oil, if it smokes alot going down the road then oil is getting into the comustion chamber

is that the 5.4 triton v8? if so my navi did the same thing. at my next oil change i had an engine stop leak additive put in. it reconditions the cylinder walls and what not too i believe. i never had an issue after. didnt lose any oil at all.

Chase, Yes it is the 5.4. I'll give that a try. There is a small amount on the valve covers, but not enough to justify a quart every few weeks. I believe its burning it. Thanks

personally I would never run sealants through my engine, you don't know what else you're going to clog up. I'd check your spark plugs to see if there is any oil fouling on them in certain cylinders. most common oil consumption inside the engine comes form worn valve guides or oil control rings.

i typically dont either but my dad has the 4.6 triton v8 and his motor did the same thing. ran a bottle of heartland high mileage oil changer (stops leaks, smoke, etc) and 200k miles later his engine is still fine. my 5.4 i put a good amount of miles on with zero issues after doing so also

I would guess that the valve seals are starting to leak oil into the cylinders and burning it - thats why you don't see it on the floor.
