Assuming it's s manual seat, look for a cable under the seat and pull it. This should disengage the mechanism allowing the seat to move. As you do this try to figure out why the lever isn't doing this for you and you may be able to then fix the problem. Example a pop can wedged.
You just need to take the seat out and inspect the track and the pins. I dont believe there is a cable but I could be wrong about that.
Your probably right, it's probably a one sided deal. Pretty simple mechanism to where the owner has a good chance at fixing it after looking at it with a flashlight. A broken spring or missing. Something bent?
Had to put a seat track in one a while ago a pin started to come out and bent and apparently nothing on the track is serviceable and from ford it was a pretty penny.

I HAVE A 2001 FORD EXPLORER SPORT POWER SEAT, MY SEAT SOMETIMES MOVES FORWARD AND BACKWARDS BUT MOST OF THE TIME IT DOSNEST IT DONT. IT DOES TILT UP AND DOWN.. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME
I have the same problem. I ordered a new power switch that controls the forward/back, up/down direction, and will we removing the entire seat, and replace the switch If this does not solve the problem I would have to replace the forward/back motor. Note: there is a separate motor for the forward/back and up/down/tilt positions. It appears that most of the problems I encountered is due to faulty switches. I recently replace my side mirror control switch and cruise control switches and they work fine. Take care
