Why is my 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT shutting off while in motion?

I was driving down the road and all of a sudden the engine started "stuttering" and forced itself to "throttle down". It has been doing this for about a month, but today it went further and after stuttering about 6-8 times in a row the engine shut off. The battery stayed on and electrics worked. The engine started back up after I put it in park and cranked it again. I was wanting to know what part(s) is causing this and a rough estimate on cost of repairs. Thanks in advance.

There are several different things that can cause the symptoms you describe. You could have a fuel pump failure ($300 guess) The PCM may have a problem ($500+ guess) Your Catalytic Converter(s) may be plugging up ($1000 guess) You're going to need an accurate diagnosis and repair estimate from a skilled technician (like myself) that can actually test the vehicle and report actual findings instead of guesses. (Less than $200 for certain) If you're just looking for a simple fix I'm afraid that there isn't one. You do realize that you're asking for a diagnosis and repair estimate on the internet don't you?
