oil dipstick reading

which is the proper way to read the oil

With the engine off wait at least 5 minutes for the oil to run down. Pull the dipstick and wipe it with a rag. Put it back in and then read the oil level. There will be markings on the dipstick. Keep the oil level at the top mark.
