Try a new battery. If your battery is five or more years old, it may not be holding it's charge. Went through the same ordeal with my kids VW a while back. Changed out the starter, and all I got was a click. Put battery on a load tester and it tested fine. I finally changed out the battery, and that was the problem the entire time. Has started fine ever since the battery change.
