Electrical Problem

I currently replaced the alt. and when I tried to start it, didn't start. I jump started and it turned on. Then when I took the cables off the truck would stay on for about 30 sec. and then shut down. I jumped it again and started and the same thing happened. What can it be?

Question tennisshoes: When you speak of unhooking the battery while the engine running, do you mean the assisting vehicle or the vehicle being jumped?
