Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2003 F150 5.4L Gas EFI  - Cranks, No start, no fuel pump whine at ignition on.

I had a few occurences over the past few weeks, eventually able to start after several
tries, now no luck starting, but cranks over fine.

Battery is good, Fuse #10 20 Amp to the fuel pump is OK.
I tried hitting the fuel tank with a mallet a few times in case the fuel pump has a
commutation problem, no luck.

AAA towed it to their shop, says it is a "fuel pump module", will cost $614 for the part
and $300 to install.  (seems pretty expensive)

I see model years 2004 and newer have a "FPDM" fuel pump driver module, like the
Autozone & others part - the  Dorman 590-001 FPDM,
which is $60-$110 on Amazon or ~ $100 at Autozone.

I can't seems to find confirmation that there is a FPDM on the 2003 model year, now I
think the service adviser may have meant Fuel Pump / Sender assembly.

Any comments are appreciated, thank you.

Sounds like your fuel pump might be bad. But Have you checked your fuel pump inertia switch. If it's tripped the fuel pump will not come on.

Have a 2010 f150 with 5.4, replaced fuel pump with own few years back, happened to me yesterday, wouldn't crank, let it sit for bout 15 mins, cranked & ran fine, stopped by & had O'Reilly & had them put code reader on it...showed No Faults. Still cranks & runs fine. 1st time coming across this. Trying to find possible causes. Will check #27 fuse.
