Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Last night i went up the street to the corner store.
Cut the truck off came back out truck would not
start. I turn the key lights and everything comes on.
Try to turn it over wont turn over. Hear a click. But
still wont turn over. Had someone tap on the
starter and it turned on. No check engine light on.
Recently replaced battery and cleaned the cords.
Can anyone tell me what all could possibly be the
problem?

If tapping on the starter got it to work, then that is a good indication that there is a problem with the starter. As long as the battery is being charged up by the alternator and has a good charge.
Yeah im figuring thats whats wrong. But im seeing people say that it could possibly be. A fuel pump relay or fuel filter something of that nature that may need to be replaced
No, your engine starts when the starter works. Starter problem is what is going on if tapping on it makes it work.
Okay thanks. Do u know as far as how to replace the starter. Or what on the starter that gets replaced
Well yes, but you may want to take it somewhere. The battery needs to be disconnected, the wires taken off of the starter, then there are 3 bolts to take out to remove the starter. Look at this starter, it is an expensive one, if there is a starter & alternator shop around your area, may just want the one out of your truck repaired. Here is a link to what this starter looks like... https://www.carid.com/2004-ford-f-150-charging-starting/motorcraft-starter-motor-72225971.html
How would i repair the one i have on the truck? Would it be to just replace the solenoid and relay that connects to the battery?
No, the problem is with the starter when you have to tap the starter for it to work, so there may be worn bushings or bearing, brushes may be worn, just wouldn't know until it was torn apart. I was suggesting a starter & alternator shop for the repair if one was close by. They could look at it and recommend if it was worth, or cheaper to repair your starter, or if you needed to replace it.
Oh okay. Thanks going to look into those and see what happens
