I agree with TOM, look at the weep hole at the bearing of the waterpump...this is where the leaks DO happen to warn you from a catastrophic failure, involving the fan and the radiator (depending on which model)....but water pup ain't no mo~ and only 17 dollars~ https://www.google.com/#q=2002+chevrolet+malibu+water+pump&tbm=sh op

When you park your car, where is the leak? The fluid will fall straight down due to the gravational pull of the earth. So where the puddle is, that is where you start to look. Start on top, use a kleenex of scrap of "fresh" toilet paper to wipe the area. As soon as it becomes wet, that is the area you need to concentrate on to find what is leaking. Hopefully it is just a hose and it is cheep and easy to fix. If you are not mechanically inclined, find a good friend that know to fix cars, it may cost a steak dinner or a six pack and parts to fix.

Go for it if you are talented enough to do it. But before tearing down, find the source of the leak. The water pump has a seat hole that if it is leaking will have moisture in the sea hole. If it is dry, look somewhere else. I'd start with the hoses and the connections. Best is to use a piece of dry pap3er and rub around what may be the source. Also look for signs of radiator coolant seepage as it may travel along part of the under-structor before dropping on the ground. No need to spend hard earned money when not needed.

Hey everyone. My name is John and I've worked on autos for around 15 yrs and equipment for 4. I recently developed a coolant leak in my 02 malibu. At first glance I thought the water pump, easy fix on these cars and cost was $50 for pump and antifreeze. Put it on, still had a leak. I knew the intake seeps a little so was hesitant jump right in. Started taking things apart to get a better look and determined it was the timing cover. For the diysrs , you may want help from someone w knowledge. But really, the only special tool you need is a balance puller. I can't inform you on price as I've yet looked online and the stores were closed. Btw, my leak was on the pass side, and really looking hard, I could see it running down the side of the cover just behind/beside of tensioner pulley. Very difficult to see and even in daylight you need a light.
