4wd not engaging and bad front end vibration/wobble

Asked by Kenny Jan 06, 2016 at 04:51 PM about the 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty XLT 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just recently had front axle seals replaced on
my 1999 ford f250 4wd, an ever since my 4wd
want engage, sounds like the gears are grinding
and popping an when disengaged an in park the
transfer case shaft an left side axle free spins
an right side axle seems to be locked when I
turn by hand. Also from time to time there's a
bad vibration/wobble at 40+ mph. bad enough
that it's shakes everything inside the truck an
makes it hard to control at times. I'm a
mechanic myself but this vibration has me
puzzled. Any idea's.

Having the super duty front axle the drive axle goes through the hub bearing and should be secured by a snap ring. If the axle end isn't secured positively it could cause a wobble at the universal joint behind the hub that would get worse at higher rpm's. If this is the case then depending on how you hubs lock (vacumn or manual) a vacumn hub would be prone to unlocking.
