How hard is it to change my fuel gage

Every time I back my boat trailer down the boat ramp the fuel gage goes to the empty mark and stays there. My check engine light comes on , I go to autozone to have it checked and they tell me it is my fuel gage .Sometimes it will come back to normal but I can’t rely on it to being correct
