My 1991 Ford LTD sputtering and bogging down when accelerating
Asked by Jimmy JFree Mar 31, 2018 at 08:01 PM about the 1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria 4 Dr LX Sedan
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
This is a 5.0 302... Sometimes it accelerates decently, but
not as strong as it used to... other times it sputters and
slowly starts to accelerate... then occasionally it damn near
stalls out... barely a crawl sputtering and backfiring... I
release the gas and press until it finally catches... It also
cranks a bit slow... New starter, distributor, cap, rotor
button, wires, plugs, water pump, and cold air intake... Any
suggestions on where I should start looking for trouble?

Sounds like it's fuel delivery related. Aside from the fuel pump, regulator, and filter, check the performance of the EGR, MAP or MAF sensor. You don't mention mileage on the motor, if it's high, something like a clogged catalytic converter can give symptoms like yours.

I'm probably going to replace the EGR & IAC tomorrow and look into the MAP and MAF sensor... redid the exhaust system and put a new fuel filter on a few months back... bought this as my first car 11 years ago with 60,000 miles on it, odometer stopped at 64,130 around a year later... so it has over 100k on it... didn't drive it for maybe 2 years between stationed in the northern states and deployed to Kuwait... and havent driven it but occasionally on the weekends the last few years...

Replaced the EGR, IAC, and MAF sensor... noticed an improvement, but still noticing a skip and stutter when slowing down to around 20 then accelerating... it's hit or miss when coming to a complete stop... no issue when going downhill... but definitely still there when going uphill or not coming to a complete stop...
