2001 cavalier when in park sounds fine when put in drive or reverse makes a high pitched whining sound and takes a few moments for it to go. When driving it won't speed up...

Sounds like low transmission fluid. Check to fluid level with the engine running. If the fluid level is ok then it might be something more serious with the transmission. It also could be bad motor mounts. For that, have someone look for excessive engine movement when you shift it from park to drive or reverse while your foot is on the brake. I am hoping its just low on trnny fluid, good luck.
