S10 water pump battery drain.

Asked by GuruNT5HQ Oct 18, 2019 at 08:21 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 LS RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my 2000 S10 has had some coolant issues in the past,
mainly being clogged up due to bad maintenance by a
previous owner. This morning on my way to work the
engine got very hot and the battery light came on. I topped
off the radiator and radiator and reservoir, and it seemed
to hear cycle normally and didn't overheat, however the
battery didn't charge and I almost didn't make it home. My
mind is telling me that the accessory belt has drag on it
most likely from the water pump with a bad bearing,
keeping the alternator from charging properly. Any ideas?

One way is to test it your theory. Start the car and probe the battery with your multimeter. You should see around 14V. 12.3V with the engine off. If you don't see 13.8 or higher or it fluctuates. then yes, your probably right.
