Why is my 1998 Dodge ram 1500 is burning oil??

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, with a 5.9 liter gasoline engine. I've had it sisnce it was new. I don't drive it alot. I only have 67,000 original miles on it. Bought a travel trailer 3yrs ago, and pulled it with no problem. This past year I noticed that everytime I pulled it, I would get a pinging from the engine, when accelerating,especially going up hill. Also I noticed that I was burning over a quart of oil on a trip. I brought it into a mechanic shop a few months ago, they gave me a tune up, spark plugs,wires,rotor,cap,etc. They also told me that the pinging sound was do to an advanced timing issue,and that my computer needed to be reset. They did all that and it seemed to sesolve the pinging but the truck is still burning oil. The mechanic had also mentioned another reset, for oil burning issues but did'nt do it cause at the time I did'nt know I was burning so much oil. Has anyone ever heard of this program reset, for "oil consumption" or have any other ideas on this oil burning problem. Any advise would be great! thx.

Hi there is no such thing as oil consumption rest in your PCM.....the issue you are having is on the bottom of the intake is a steel belly pan and what happens is the gasket gets sucked in ...no you have a vacuum leak to the inside of the engine which pulls in oil which burns it and then causes the engine to ping because you have burnt oil deposits on your valves and pistons ...the way to test this is to remove and plug the pcv valve and plug the other vacuum lines at the intake and plug the oil breather hose then take a vacuum gauge and place it were the pcv goes into the valve cover and start the engine ...if you have vacuum there then the intake has to come off and the belly pan gasket replaced ...after that run some injector cleaner through it and you will defiantly notice the differance
if you google TSB 09-05-00 it will show you all you need to do and all of the part numbers and torque specs to do the job

Hey no problem.....//if you do end up doing it yourself just be careful when torquing the intake down it is in inch pounds and has to be done evenly ...I have seen them tightened with an air tool and it ends up bad by cracking the intake ....//other than that its a pretty strait forward job...// we use to take the fan and the fan shroud off and stand right inside made it easier to reach just have to have a tool cart or a minion around to hand you tools :)
Hey Moparjohn, one more question. Do you think that this situation with the intake gasket, would cause the truck to use more gas.I read that in a couple of car forums. Thx
I have 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4 X 4 Sport, 5.7 lilter magnum engine with 66,000 miles and this vehicle has started to ping and use a lot of oil. So I assume that I have a intake leak? I will check with a mechanic today about the repair. Thanks
I have the same problem never looked lnto it i just dont run it hard seems to wrk a little but I e been told that that the valve stem seals play a pretty good role with oil consumption took me to think the age of the engine mileage heavy acceleration yup think that's it there worn but thing is if it's not broke dont fix it cause she's built to last and can go another 100,000 miles just dont for get to add a quart
I have a 99 Ram 5.9L I did a plenum gasket check n it turned out good but it’s still burning a substantial amount of engine oil? Any ideas ? I also put a new PCV but nothing it didn’t help
On my 98 5.9 oil is spraying out of the exhaust pipe when running. Whats g a ppening
