My 2001 Suburban 1500 is driving sluggishly. It slows down and won't accelerate. Then it accelerates a little and slows down again. There were also boars coming from the engine at the same time.

START WITH CHANGING THE FUEL FILTER !!!NOISES..LIKE WHAT..GURGLING, THUMPING(OVER HEATED)/ GRINDING??
It sounded like backfiring. I also have a slight oil leak and the noises made me think I wrecked the engine from not checking the oil in a while. I just tried starting it to get a better description of the noises, but it won't start. I always wait for the fuel pump to finish engaging first and it was way louder than normal. I also heard the fuel pump while the engine was turning over and after I turned the key off which has never happened before. I should also say that a month or so ago when I was having my AC fixed, I had the mechanic hook his computer up to see why the service engine light was on. There were 2 possibilities but the only one i remember was the catalytic converter. I saw on a forum earlier that someone who had a similar problem had to change their cat. Any thoughts on that possibility?
WHY DIDNT YOU SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?/ILL GET BACK TO YOU ON MY NEXT SHIFT..FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS CHECK INSIDE THE DIST,AND CAP..A CAT EVEN PLUGEDT HE ENGINE WILL FIRE OFF..
Sorry, forgot about that at first. It's there another soft coming up? I need to try to get this done today so I can get to work tmw.
Also, you said to check inside the dist and cap. Are you sure I have those? I thought they stopped using those a long time ago.
YOU HAVE NOT EVEN SAID WHAT ENGINE..BUT HERES WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE
Sorry, it's the 8 cyl, 5.3 liter. Thanks, I'll look into it!
According to the Chilton manual, the dist is on the v6 models.
THE ROTOR ON THESE BURN A PIN HOLE THRU THEM..BUT YOU SAID YOU THINK IT SOUNDED LIKE BAKE FIRING..SO THEN IS TRANSMITTING SPARK FROM COIL TO CYLINDERS...???
