Brake issues

Asked by JbrMan99 Sep 30, 2019 at 10:43 AM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 4x4, my brake
pedal depressed all the way and I have no
brake power. Could this be caused by bad
calipers?

Same truck, same year but mine is a short bed 4x4 Sport/5 speed. I had the same thing happen on a short trip to the local dump. Once back home I checked the brake fluid which did have some loss. Refilled and pumped brake pedal as saw fluid dripping from the drivers frame rail behind the fuel tank so believe the line leading to the rear brake system has a rust hole or has rubbed the frame. All lines do show some rust, so probably will just replace them all with stainless line set and will have to lower the fuel tank for this to happen. Being a safety issue, I don't understand why stainless lines are not a requirement on all vehicles.
