Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Dodge 1500 with 5.2L. Driving today and started hearing a popping noise coming from engine and immediate loss of power and RPM. Noise goes away and power comes back after truck slows down. Any ideas? Thanks!

Do you have or can you get your hands on a scanner that reads live data? Walmart sells 'em for around $40, online maybe a little cheaper. Are you at least a "shadetree" qualified mechanic with basic tools? This problem can be caused by way too many thing to diagnose with so little info. But, a good place to start would be the cat, go to a muffler shop n have it pressure checked, maybe clogging up, most shops will check it for free...phone around. If this is indeed the first guess luck o' the draw kinda thing...WAIT...don't go replacing the cat just yet. A bad intake manifold can cause the cat to clog, however, bad gas could...but...it get's expensive fast when just guessing. Will need more info n a scanner would really help.

I'll look into getting a scanner and see what I can find out. Starting to think perhaps an injector got temporarily blocked as I cannot get truck to repeat the issue. Thanks for the help!
