I had a similar truck that I traded in 2009. Around 2006, the transmission cooler malfunctioned. It started shifting in a strange manner, then shortly thereafter, the trans temp dummy light lit up. At that point the 4 speed auto had destroyed itself. All of this was due to some kind of a back 'check ball valve' design that Mopar came up with. Not sure if that's what it going on with your truck, but what could've been a $50-60 repair ended up costing me a rebuilt trans. Be wary.
Well when you end up changing tranny's make sure to put in a rebuilt torque converter ,no sense in doing the job twice
