Can I test ignition switch?

Asked by kmartin9166 Jan 11, 2017 at 10:40 AM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 ST LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When trying to start the truck, I turn ignition and nothing, no sound, no lights, nothing except if the door is open the bell still dings as if the key is in the ignition.  I have replaced the battery, but wanted to test ignition switch to make sure it isn't that before replacing alternator. Gauges never showed it wasn't charging and this happened last week, but after waiting it started.

Yes, will take two people, one person get under the truck at the starter, with a test light, one end grounded, the other on the small wire connection on the starter, the persons to turn the key to the start position. There may be other ways, I like this method to work my way back looking for problems.
