Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What all reasons would make a 02 Dodge Ram 1500 ST with a 4.7
Engine
use twice of the amount of fuel it should be using and exhaust smells
rich also ?

Leaking fuel injectors will make the truck run rich. I bet you engine oil also has gas in it. Fix this before you damage your engine.

There are 2 common reasons for the 4.7 to be a gasaholic. The first is bad injectors. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail, start and stop the engine. The fuel pressure should remain fairly constant. If it doesn't 1, or more, injectors are leaking. The second, and more common is the ECT. With a code reader that is live data capable, check the engine coolant temp with the engine cold. Start the engine and verify that the sensor reads the coolant temp increasing all the way to the 190's F. Usually, these sensors lock cold and you end up driving with the engine in full choke mode..

Thanks for the info from Full of Regrets and techpaddle. Should I change all of the injectors or just the o rings on them if there leaking when i pressure test them ? Also the ECT what is it ? Do you mean the coolant temp. sensor when referring the "ECT" ? Thank You Very Much and Happy New Years

If the injectors show leakage, pull them out and have an injector shop or diesel repair shop run a leakage test on them. The leak is internal and cannot be repaired easily. It is best to replace the defective ones and put new upper and lower O rings on the others. ECT is the Engine Coolant Temp. sensor. It tells the computer at what temp. the engine is running at.
