The timing chain is not normally a part that needs replacing. As far as time replacing it that really depends more on your experience level and if you have all the correct tools. If you do I would recommend using a Haynes or similar manual.

Overhead Cam motors, like the Chrysler 4.7 & 2.7 and the Ford 4.6 are notorious for needing timing chains. Overhead cam motors like these motors need to be avoided. It's cheaper to replace them than repair them. If you happen to have one......believe me when I tell you...........change the oil every 3000 or run amsoils best oils if you like synthetic. People who think a timing chain doesn't need replacing only know about overhead valve motors. They don't understand overhead cam motors.

You will know when the timing chain guides and tensioners need to be changed. You will hear a clicking noise as the chain rolls over the guides or you have a hydraulic chin tensioner failure. this noise will be heard at the front of the engine under the front cover of the block. you can also check the cam chain tension through two plugs in the heads. There should be no slack in the cam chains whatsoever.

Before you take it apart make sure you line up the timing mark to top dead center. Very important! On this engine... Top dead center is top dead center. You don't need to worry about it being on an intake or exhaust stroke. Again top dead center is top dead center. Then remove the accessory items from the front of the engine. Use a special puller for the crank pulley. Chrysler has a special tool to grasp the crank pulley. Then remover the valve covers. Use a spanner wrench to hold the cams in place when you remove the cam sprocket bolts. Then you can remove the idler sprocket for the three chains. Hope this helps. If you have more questions just ask.
