ABS light and brake light lit then speedometer quit

Shop is telling me springs inside differential broke causing speed sensor to explode.  
Want to charge me $2600 to rebuild.  Does this sound legit?

Speed sensor is not a lot of money it is rebuilding the rearend that cost the most. I bought used rearend for my 95ram.cost me $300.
