Why won't the interior lights come on when driver's side doors are opened?

Asked by MyhemiMark65 Nov 06, 2014 at 01:52 PM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Quad Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Over the period of a year, my interior lights would flicker on/off depending on position of the driver's door, and ultimately stopped coming on when the driver's door was opened.  Just recently this extended to when the driver's side rear seat passenger door was open.  The interior lights would and still come on when either the front or rear passenger side doors were opened.  Fuses were checked (only fuse box I could find was in the engine compartment, is there a fuse box location in the cab?)   Also the chime for "headlights on and key removed from steering column" when the driver's door was open no longer functioned.  At the recommendation of Dodge, we replaced the driver's door latch.  Still no interior lights or headlights on chime.

Recently I had a fog light bulb burn out, but the lampout indicator on the instrument panel did not illuminate.  I bring this up because for a while the lampout indicator would illuminate when I would move the shifter handle from Park to any other position, but that no longer happens as well.  Are all these indicators linked somehow?  I realize it is possible the bulb on the instrument panel may be out for the lampout indicator.  If so, does anyone have any suggestions on what it might be?  I'm not interested in paying the dealer for a diagnostics or repair to only have them recommend something else that doesn't solve the problem.

on your door open and no light on check your door frame for a button because that would keep the light and chime from turning on, also refer to your owners manual for all locations of fuse boxes. the fuse boxes on these newer vehicles are under the hood and also under the dash on the drivers side.

I checked my door frames and around the hinges and there aren't any buttons to activate the interior light and chime. I also referred to my owners manual and it only lists the fuse and relay center in the engine compartment. Thank you for your answer though. Oh, and I did look up under the dash on the driver's side where you'd expect to see the second fuse box. There isn't a panel labelled fuses or even a panel to pull open like on the side of the lower dash that faces the driver's door.

Same here. No interior fuse box. No interior lights, but only back drivers door. All other doors activate lights properly. And no button of any sort to activate interior lights. Is it done by magnets by any chance?

Open your door and peel back the rubber boot protecting the wires that run from the cab to the door. The wires are barely long enough and after repeated opening/ closing they kink and break.

I had to take my interior door panel off to disconnect the wire harness and fed it back through the door frame so I had enough slack to repair the broken wires

I am having this same problem. I will pull the door panel to see if I can find a break. But this all started after having the heating core and blower replace. They had to go into the dash 5 time and on the last time is when this problem started. Any thoughts?

I am also having this issue. Only difference with mine is that it will work sometimes and not others. Doesn't matter what door I open, doesn't matter if all doors are open. Even when I'm driving and I turn the dimmer all the way up to turn on my dome light, it won't turn on. I have a 2016 1500 ecodeisel trademen (only the 1 light overhead). I'm taking it to the dealership today. I will follow up with y'all when they solve this issue.

29mpgdiesel2016 let me know what they discover. My previous repair statement was for my 2006 2500. I have traded it for a 2010 2500 which has an interior lighting issue. Lights won't illuminate with doors opened, glove box and vanity lights in sun visors won't work. Have gone over wiring diagrams and have traced issue back to the instrument cluster. If I unplug harnesses from cluster and plug back in everything works properly for a short period of time (open/ close glovebox or doors maybe a dozen times) before they all quit working again

I own a 2010 Ram 1500 and my problem is that the dome lights will not turn on when the doors are closed and I press the switches. This is the case for both front lights and the rear light. When I open any of the doors, the lights come on and I can still turn them off by pressing the switches. I can also turn them on by rotating the dimmer switch to the full-on position. I'm guessing the cause is in the computer somehow. I have been the only owner of my truck and have had this problem off-and-on since it was new. There have been occasions when all of the lights worked normally, but at the moment, they do not. Any advice?

I found the cause to my problem! Apparently, the lights in my vanity mirrors are tied in with the dome lights. The lights in my driver's side vanity mirror haven't worked since about a year after I bought my truck, but I played around with them today and got my dome lights to work again. I will tear into the wiring more when I get a chance to find where the connection is intermittent and put a permanent fix to it!

I have had these issues with the interior lights in my 2011 dodge ram since it was new. Vanity mirror lights come on about 1 out of 8 times. Sometimes they come on initially but if you close them and open them back up they don't. The interior lights sometimes don't work unless you turn the interior lights manually on all the way then get out and click all the lights off manually. Then when you get in truck next time they are all on again! A.M. radio has whistling feedback when you turned motor on which stops when you apply the car brake. Dodge claims no problems like this for anyone else and I can bring it to the dealer for $140/hr to see if they can diagnose it. But you pay whether they find it or not. I had the radio replaced when it was under warranty and got it back with same whistle. Brought it back and they claimed they replaced the antenna and the whistle was gone....for about 6 months then it came back.

So...after almost 3 years I finally fixed this issue. I found a wiring harness for the door in a junkyard off a 2005 Ram 1500. It had all the clips attached, which is rather hard to find from what I have experienced. And the wiring harness is not available for purchase anywhere, except a used one from a junkyard if you can find one intact. I disconnected the wiring harness at the connection to the body (fender) of the vehicle...not all that easy as the space to work is very limited...nonetheless, I was able to disconnect it. Inspected the two clips (one is white, the other is black) and I had 3 wires that were exposed, but not broke. I believe this is just a matter of age and also part of the manufacturing process. I connected the harness from the junkyard (I paid $30 for it by the way), and the master control switch lit up!! The only problem with the harness was that it didn't have the connector for the driver's door lock (on the handle), The connector the master control switch was in much better condition to mine (hardly any corrosion). By the way, I think there are something like 22 wires that run to the driver's door...and it is all crammed in tight under the dash. In replacing the connector the master contorl switch I used blue (14-16 gauge vinyl butt connectors as well as cut shrink tubing (about 2 inches long) and connected the new clip that goes to the window/lock master control. There are a couple wires that are 18-20 gauge...the right size butt connector is a must!! By the way, most of the wires are orange with a different color stripe...some with wider stripes, some with varying shades of blue, gree, gray yellow and white. I used electrical tape to tape pairs together according to how they are seated in the clip. I inspected the rest of the wires up to the wire boot and connected the harness back to the clip on the fender panel (I didn't run the wiring harness back through the door at this time, as this was to test the connectoins. The same problem persisted. By now I had been working on this for about 3 hours...and it was cold outside. Next day, I pulled the wiring harness out again (after I installed it even though it didn't work for the windows, but the locks and mirrors stil worked). Decided to peel back the rubber boot. Holy crap...there were 8 wires completely severed. Again vinyl butt connectors and shrink tubing to protect the connections and wires. It is very tight as it is. Got all 8 wires reconnected...inspected for other cracks and exposed wires. Time to smoke test the harness. Connected it up...and still the same problem existed. Took the harness back to the workbench and started to look at those wires in that region again. I found 3 wires that had stretched to the point that the wires inside had separated but the wire cover was intact and looked "normal". I reconnected these wires and test the harness again. SUCCESS!!! I had all power functions...interior light comes on when door opens, notification if key is in the ignition but not on if you open the door, my rear passenger window that I have not been able to roll down for nearly a year now, worked. My question is to Dodge/Chrysler. With as many 2002-2008 Rams that are still on the road, why is the left front door wiring harness not available? I can get the door harness for the passenger side, and the read doors as well. Second question to Dodge: what engineer thought that cramming that many wires through 1 opening was a great idea? Two separate passages (protected of course) would be so much better...where the harness for the master control switch is isolate from the other wires for the heat mirrors, power mirror, door locks, speaker, and security system. Good luck folks in finding a complete harness. that said, I have two extra harnesses (without the connectors for the master control switch) if anyone wants or nees them. I paid $30 for one and $20 for the other at two separate junkyards (pulled them myself). Cover shipping cost and they are yours. It is so nice to have all my window, light and door chime functions operational once again. By the way...my 2005 Ram 1500 (5.7L) has just rolled 395,000 miles. I just put a new starter, replaced the original equipment from the factory. It's still in great shape with a few rust spots on the hood and over the rear passenger's door (left side). It does burn oil, but doesn't smoke when sitting in idle. I had the rear main seal and valve cover gaskets replaced last year and my mechanic (the guy I use for those WTF moment jobs) has over 20 years experience working on dodge/chrysler and said he was impressed with out clean the inside of the engine was. Change your oil (full synthtic), don't run cheap gas, and fix it when it breaks. Dodge trucks are the toughest SOBs out there!!

Ken...you might need to ensure the radio is properly grounded. I recall on my 70 Dart radio noise would be present and there was a resistor on the firewall that I had to replace to make it stop. not sure that's the case these days though. Good luck...and of course Dodge is always gonna say or claim no problems like this for anyone else. Dealerships piss me off and I NEVER go to them for work...only for recall work.

2015 Ram Hemi 1500 the dome light doesn't work when door is opened, belonged to a sheriffs department, Dodge dealer says, "that's the way it was made", I don't believe that, The light works fine when you press it on,

Tha's crazy! The dealership doesn't want to have to fix the poor engineering design of the wiring harness, or dig through the headliner to fix it. If you press on it and it comes on, it sounds like maybe the connection in the headliner isn't locked in. Maybe an upholstery shop can take a look since they know the ins/outs of headliners, etc. Does the dome light work when the passenger doors (or rear doors) are open? I found that owning an Auto Trim Removal Tool kit makes working on the doors, dash and other trim pieces so much more easier. And they aren't that expensive either. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076M3YSH2/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5? psc=1&pd_rd_i=B076M3YSH2&pd_rd_wg=TjDFc&pd_rd_r=3HKT3CCJYWZ4XZ8ZN8CM &pd_rd_w=CEX6a

Damn I was really hoping it was a fuse. I just bought the truck and it was during the day so I didn't notice that the interior lights didn't come on for awhile. Geez that sounds like a gigantic PITA. Freaking engineers design stuff to break so that you go buy new.

I've been rackin' my mind for awhile on this lighting problem and it makes perfect sense for it to be a design issue! Wouldn't have thought to go there. Thanks MyhemiMark65 for the post - and thanks for figuring it out man!

I am the most frugal man in the world and I refused to spend gobs of money on repairs. Simple fix folks. And it is so cool. I installed Fancy remote push button LED closet lights in my truck! Just put the remote on you pocket. 12.99 ! Everyone digs it!!! Even the kids! Extra bright and I did not spend big money at dealership and I will never! Dealerships are money hungry.

I have a 1995 1500 and the dome lights only work when the key is on. obviously not a fuse or the door switches. i don't believe that this problem will ever be fixed because these vehicles are built to have nothing but problems that cannot be fixed. detroit's so called engineers are not engineers at all. they are all sociopaths with tiny brains. I will get rid of this pos soon and never again buy any vehicle built after 1974. they are all garbage. you can keep your computers and sensors and all the bullshit bells and whistles. nothing but cheap shit garbage designed purposely to be nothing but trouble

my doors also lock by themselves. good thing I carry two sets of keys. not even gonna try to figure out any of these problems. none of these vehicles are worth driving yourself crazy over. it's much easier and cheaper and safer to just sell the peice of trash and get another, until that one gives you troubles.

not gonna find answers to many of these problems. there are no answers. only that these vehicles are designed to be garbage. the morons who designed this pos mcouldn't figure nit out if their miserable little lives depended on it. they couldn't figure out what they were designing to begin with, much less trouble shoot problems
