To Invest or Not to Invest - 2005 Dodge Ram?

Asked by BigHenry911 Aug 18, 2019 at 09:58 AM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Father in Law gave me his 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, 4.7
Liter. It has 155K miles - Not driven hard miles, but he is an
admitted cheapskate.

□ With that said, I see on here a rebuild (how much does it
cost and what does that entail to rebuild?).

□ Drove decently, yet was stranded my first night... I
believe the A/C fan continued to run post engine shut down
and drained the battery. So I jumped it. This was last night.
Ugh.

□ The point: Should I invest in this truck (considering I will
maintain truck), or should I leave it as isand run it to the
ground?

○ Here's my list:

● Door Controls are loose - Replace?

● Window Tint Passenger Side needs to be Replaced

● Needs to be Steamed Cleaned - Interior (or
Reupholstered?)

● A/C Runs Post Engine Shutdown - Not sure why.

● Drained Battery - Cables to be Replaced (?)

● Check Alternator - precautionary

● Check Alignment - feels like it needs it.

● Check Brakes and Rotors.

● Check Radiator - Replace?

● Shocks (Hood for sure, not sure about suspension)

● Sway Bar Linkages? Does that keep truck from fish
tailing?

● Chip? How has adding one affect the performance or
gas mileage?

● Check Rear Axle Bearing

● Radio Replacement (doesn't work).

● Speakers Replacement (factory - not working)

● Bedliner Replaced or Resprayed

● Tires Balanced & Rotated

● Spare Tire Patched - Slow Leak

■ I am super confident this list will grow....

○ Thanks in advance for your answers.

The AC cannot run if the engine is running but maybe a fan is running inside the car or under the hood. Most of the items you listed are not terribly expensive or mandatory to get it driveable. Other than the power drain issue you can pick at the other items one at a time. The biggest question is do you want to offend the father in law by selling it?

I would not sell it. At minimum, I would pass it down to my daughter. I have learned the ignition switch may be the culprit. This is the reason the fan is blowing intermittently and causing my battery to drain while engine is shut off. All Fluids - CHECKED & DONE Filters - CHECKED & DONE Tune-Up - PENDING Ignition Switch - PENDING (converting to push button) Gas Cap - CHECKED & DONE Battery - CHECKED & DONE Alternator - CHECKED & DONE Brakes - CHECKED & DONE Radiator - CHECKED & DONE Oil and Flush - CHECKED & DONE Hood Struts - CHECKED & DONE Suspension - CHECKED & DONE Sway Bar Linkages - CHECKED & DONE All Bearings - CHECKED & DONE Cargo Light - PENDING Reverse Light - CHECKED & DONE Window Tint - PENDING Driver's Side Control Panel - PENDING Steam Clean/Upholstery - PENDING Chip - PENDING A/C - PENDING Supreme Gasoline (only) - CHECKED & DONE Sea Foam - CHECKED & DONE Radio & Speaker Replacement - PENDING Tires (Balanced & Rotation) - CHECKED & DONE Replace Spare Tire - PENDING Bedliner Resprayed - PENDING Paint - PENDING Money spent thus far is $1,200. Just the supreme gasoline and the Seafoam has made a huge difference in how it runs or picks-up. Solid truck so far. Debating on re-upholstering seats or deep steam clean. I want to either paint truck factory paint or changing to Chevy's IRIDESCENT PEARL TRICOAT - Will buy new tires in the next few months. Finally, replacing stereo and speakers. These are probably the most expensive items. Tune Up will run roughly $250 and Push Start approximately $175 A/C should be under warranty. Will keep anyone posted.
