can I swap 2008 4.7 dodge engine into my 2005 4.7 dodge engine

Asked by Calvin Sep 29, 2016 at 10:07 AM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: General

The 4.7 engine in my 05 Ram 1500 has oil pressure issues. So I bought a 08 4.7 Ram 1500 engine and transmission. I was wondering what will I have to do to make this work in my 05 Ram 1500.

You'll want to check on the compatibility of the PCM if you intend to keep your 05s. There is a difference between years on the number of teeth on the cam gear, making off-year PCMs incompatible. Dodge also made switches between wiring harnesses between years as well, so an 05 is not compatible with an 06, but may be with an 07. I think you will be looking at buying a new engine harness and using the 08's PCM and reprogramming it for the VIN and mileage to be compatible with the 05. Check the number of plugs on the PCM and see if they're the same between the two.

Thanks Ken for responding. I have the 08 PCM. Which wiring harness are you referring to? I have the harness that is under the hood.

Also just called the guy I bought the drive train from he has the complete wire harness including the fuse box. I will pick that up tonight and he has a tuner that was used in the truck as well.

I have one more question. The 08 has an electronic gas pedal. I will need to change the as well correct.

Yes, you'll need to swap pedals too, and grab the new motors engine harness and PCM. I know in 02 and 08 some major changes were made in the computers and bus, from jtech to NGC in 02, and from PCI bus to CAN bus in 08. All I can say is try and get as much of the 08's harness, modules, and linkages as you can, or stay in touch with the donor truck's owner so you can go back and get anything else that might be needed as you proceed with the swap.
