Whirring or whining noise

Asked by Normain93 Jun 11, 2019 at 11:19 AM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2005 dodge ram 1500 makes a whining noise when I
first start driving.  It'll last a few minutes then it goes away.
Usually happens after the trucks sits for a few hours and is
cooled down.

If the noise coming from the rear of your vehicle, I would have the differential pinion bearings checked. One or both could be bad. If one is damaged, replace them both plus replace both races, crush sleeve, and pinion seal. Have limited slip additive added and fresh diff gear oil added. Estimated cost of repair will be $700-$900, but worth it.
