The shifter on steering column stopped working.

2006 Dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi 4x4 205k
Okay I have had no issue with this truck and in
process of moving. Fully loaded truck got into drive
and my shift did nothing. I felt it moved but didn't
go neutral, drive, reverse nothing. Then I started
working. Then is when to "2" and I turned it off
hoping upon starting it it would be normal again
No! Can start in 2. So had to push to side of the
road. What's wrong what do I need to do? Why
have to tow tmw.

*shifter, I don't know what's it's called. I'm uses to stick. The truck must have sinced I hated automatics.
