1999 dodge Cummins 24v

Asked by GuruNBJSV Oct 25, 2019 at 09:28 PM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 ST Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 24v
Cummins I just got the truck and don’t know much
about them. It shifts hard when putting it in gears
and when shifting while driving tonight I was on my
way home and I went to pass a truck and I hit the
gas it sped up then stopped speeding up and the
rpms dropped down do you know what would
cause this?

The hard shift is normal for the 48RE transmission you have. As for the other problem, check the crankshaft position sensor. I literally just had a friend 24 valve Cummins do the same thing and we couldn't figure out what it was for a while. On his 2005 model the sensor is located on the bottom of the engine at the front near the crankshaft pulley

I don't know. We just replaced it. Also, try changing your fuel filter and see if that helps. A lot of people neglect that and it can cause similar problems
