AC Control Module Switch

Asked by Bart Jul 18, 2018 at 04:03 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just had my compressor replaced as the old one basically came apart.  After
the repairs were done, the AC worked for about 3 hours and then stopped.
The compressor clutch wouldn't engage.  The repair shop is telling me that
the AC switch isn't sending any signal to the compressor to come on and
that it is the resistor.  There is power to the control module and everything
else works (blower, blender doors, etc).  Will simply replacing the control
module be sufficient or worth a try?  Mechanic thinks so, but also suggested
wiring in a toggle switch instead that would be a cheaper and quicker fix.
Recommendations?

For your A/C to fail that fast after a repair makes me think they did something wrong. Notably, the refrigerant charge leaked down to a point the low pressure (protection) switch shuts down the compressor. (Do a pressure test.) If you ignore the lack of refrigerant and hot wire the compressor, it will run until it burns out because there is not enough refrigerant to circulate the lubricating oil. So they have to find and fix that leak and recharge your system. Also, having removed a major component (compressor) lets in air and moisture so they must evacuate (vacuum pump) it back out and start over. When I see the stuff some "mechanics" do for $85 an hour, I want to come out of retirement. Even the Three Stooges said if it ain't fixed, you don't pay. I'm not there to check, so maybe I'm wrong, but not very often. Good Luck
