Open your hood, as you're looking at the engine, on your right, there should be a dipstick with maybe an orange end on it. Pull it out with the engine running. Wipe it off and put it back in. Pull it out and that should be your level. If low, you will have to buy a transmission fluid funnel, which fits into the dipstick hole. You have to ad oil through the dipstick shaft. Make sure that your engine is hot when checking the level. The end of the dipstick should say "transmission" on it. Don't get it confused with your "engine oil" dip stick. Your transmission fluid will be red in color.

Is it the 3 speed or 4 speed. The 3 has the dipstick above but is very rare in a '00. The Cav will most likely have the 4 speed 4T40e (or 45e) and GM was to lazy to install a dipstick. Lisa what you have is a fill port on the top and a check fluid bolt on the side. Make sure the car is level side to side, pull the bolt and check the fluid. It should be visible and level with the bottom of the bolt hole. You'll have to jack it up. Here is a pic to help.
