I have a 2006 mercedes C350 sport -197000 - miles:

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a check engine light fault that came on 11 months ago.  It came on after an electrical failure of one of the control boards.  The inital fault code pointed to the balancer in the engine.  Then when the board was replaced the fault went out. It came back on 2 weeks later and now indicates a cam sensor fault, fault code 0016  0017 and 2004.  The service agent suggests pulling the motor, replacing the timing, and or balancer --  Any suggestions or similar occurances, - would the sensor itself being replaced fix this???  This is a great car and too many miles for a $5000.00 investment.

Cam sensors are know to leak and throw the CEL code. What happens is the cam sensor gasket leaks engin oil into the cam sensor wiring harness. I think its an pretty easy fix replace cam sensors and revised wiring harness. Ive read about owners fixing these for around $200 bucks. I would not let them pull the motor, Timing belt, water pump, and tensioners can be changed with the motor in the car. Just the fact that they mentioned pulling the motor would make be never go there again. I would find another indepentant mercedes mechanic. Heres a link with a huge write up about the leaky cam sensors or just google it good luck: http://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w203/378065-oil-harness-cam-sensor-leak.html
