2003 Mercedes E320 does have two pumps the left side (driver
side) is where the fuel filter/transfer pump is located this pump
takes fuel from that side of tank and pumps it directly into the
fuel pump on the right side of tank. A common problem is that
the transfer pump begins to leak and that is where you get the
smell of gasoline. My E320 was driving fine and when I got to
my destination and tried to restart it would crank but not start
after a 45 min wait it started again, I got about 15-20 mins down
the road and it stalled again had it towed home, where it started
again, had transfer pump and filter replaced 6 months earlier so
I believe it is now the actual fuel pump going out (located on
right side passenger side)
